DAKAR AND GORÉE ISLAND Dakar is one of the most active capitals of Africa. The hectic commercial life in the colonial French zone contrasts with its major crafts market, Atlantic beaches or the elitist zone of the cornice. Many authentically African neighborhoods are grouped around the historic center. Half an hour by boat from the port of Dakar, is the island of Gorée. It is a beautiful island full of historical buildings where one would say that time stands still. Its streets full of flowers, musicians, painters and craftsmen reflect a happiness which contrasts openly with a cruel past as a center of the horror of slavery. |
